Beyond Survival Report &
Murmurations Movement Fund

The impact of flexible and trust-based funding.

$50,000 regranted to 30 Member Organizations

In early 2025, SOAR conducted a network-wide needs assessment with its 50 organizational members to understand how frontline gender-based violence organizations were navigating a rapidly changing funding and political environment. Across the country, SOAR member organizations were reporting rising demand for services, staff burnout, and an increasingly hostile environment for immigrant survivors.

  • 95% of organizations reported the loss or reduction of government or philanthropic funding as a top challenge they anticipated facing in the year ahead

  • 76% are experiencing surging demand for services, and

  • 62% are facing staff burnout and retention crises.*

In response, SOAR began conversations with funders, advisors, members, and movement leaders about how to quickly move resources to organizations facing these pressures. Together, we shaped the Murmurations Movement Fund (MMF), the first fund specifically dedicated to South Asian anti-violence organizations in the United States.

MMF demonstrated what becomes possible when funding moves quickly, flexibly, and with trust. But responding to an immediate crisis is only part of the solution.

In October 2026, SOAR released Beyond Survival: Investing in the South Asian Gender Justice Movement. Drawing on what we learned from our members and MMF, the report calls on funders, philanthropists, and individual donors to rethink how they resource this work and help build a stronger, more sustainable future for the movement.

As the national field catalyst, we are bringing together funders, donors, and field leaders through a series of funder briefings to learn from one another, hear directly from organizations doing the work, and explore opportunities to increase resources for the broader GBV ecosystem.

“The grant not only provided tangible assistance to our clients, but SOAR’s support in organizing the grant in the first place, and then providing the money so generously, was an emotional hug for our organization in a time when the world is chaotic and turning away from compassion to those in need.” — SOAR Member Org & MMF Grantee
